Self-rated health (SRH) is a simple and easy-to-use measure of general health. The aim of thisstudy was to explore the validity and reliability of the SRH measure among Iranian community-dwelling olderadults.Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 600 community-dwelling older adultsaged 60 years and over in Tehran, Iran, 2017. A multistage clustered random sampling technique was employedto obtain the sample. The SRH was assessed using a single item questionnaire entitled “In general, howwould you rate your health”. The criterion validity was assessed with the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) andWorld Health Organization-five (WHO-5) well-being index. The Pearson correlation and Intra-class CorrelationCoefficient (ICC) using SPSS version 23 software were applied to test validity and reliability, respectively.Results. Out of 600 respondents, 64.0% were female. The sample mean age was 76.82 (SD = 7.45) years, andnearly 63% of them were married. The CCI and WHO-5 well-being index were employed to check criterionvalidity. The results of criterion validity showed that the CCI and WHO-5 well-being had negative and positivecorrelation with the SRH, respectively (r = -0.35, p < 0.001 and r = 0.5, p < 0.001). Additionally, the reliability ofthe SRH, using ICC, was found to be 0.83; 95% CI (0.72 to 0.90). In conclusion, study results suggested thatthe SRH has good validity and reliability in community-dwelling older adults.Conclusions. The study results showed that the SRH has good level of validity and reliability among Iraniancommunity-dwelling older adults. Due to being its easy-to-use and cost-effective, the SRH can be employedin health surveys among community-dwelling older adults. ER -
